Aims of an Ecological Restoration
The practice of ecological restoration seeks to transform humanity’s role from one where we are the agents of degradation to one where we act as conservators and healers of native ecosystems.
An ecological restoration should be aiming to achieve one or more of the following goals:
- Protect a threatened species or Plant Community Type (PCT)
- Decrease key threats
- Increase or protect biodiversity
- Increase genetic diversity (or insurance populations)
- Increase connectivity
- Increase climate change resilience
Activities to achieve these goals will include:
- Bush regeneration focused on removing plants that do not belong (weeds)
- Planting species that belong in the Plant Community Type (PCT)
- Pest control
- Animal breeding and release
- Area protection through fencing
- Strategic burning
- Habitat augmentation such as hollow creation, nest boxes.
